I use a Belgian Browning 30-06 that I have been hunting with for decades. The sweetest bullet I found for it is Winchester Super X 180 Gr. Power Points. It is a deer killing machine. That said, I no longer take body shots unless it is a personal trophy (mature buck with good horns). Why is that important? Because I am taking neck shots! Doesn't matter to me how far out. If that bullet hits any part of the area on either side of the neck bone, that is an instant drop.

Truth be told, I don't have 300 yard distances anywhere on my property. In fact 200 yds is about the longest shot period; and you would have to go out of your way to look for it. But back to the bullet. I only use a 180 grain bullet no matter what. It is a serious chunk of lead. I dead zero at 100 yds exactly. Inside of that I don't try to compensate. Past that, I will start to play the game, but only a little.

In fact, I started using Winchester on my 7mm Mag, and my .270WSM and all 180 gr.

It really depends on the personal preference and the circumstances.

I have rifles in all 4 of the above mentioned calibers. All have killed deer. Ammo is readily available in each caliber, with .30-06 and .308 having more fmj choices. Point is though, shoot whatever ammo you are going to hunt with, POA will be slightly different between rounds.

My .270 has been my go to lately because I scored a Remington 783 on clearance at academy and for a cheap gun, its a tack driver. Winchester super x in all of the above calibers has proven itself over and over again.

.270 and 30-06 are my calibers. All cheap to shoot and plenty of choices on the shelf. All good to my limit which is 250 yards , not the limit of the caliber by any means just for me and my eyes. For hunting a bonded bullet is the only way to go, and Noslers Accubond is my choice. Every rifle has a round it likes best so do a little range shooting to try a couple of brands. My x-bolt .270wsm loves Nosler brand 140 grain accubonds they are not cheap though.
