My .308 is great. I would reccomend one to anyone. It will turn a deer's chest cavity to jelly. When I sight in my rifle, I get good consistency at 75 yards, 100 yards, and it starts getting shaky from there, but a lot of that is probably me. I've shot a buddy of mines .300 and we both preferred my .308.

If you're not shooting at >300 yards on a regular basis, I don't think you'll realize any of the .300 Win Mag's advantages.

I don't shot long range rifle competition. But I learned from talking to someone who does a couple of months ago that they shun heavy recoiling rifles. After a string of fifty with heavy recoil the accuracy begins to suffer from the human factor. They prefer 223 chambered bolt actions from what I was told.

Also, you can develop a flinch with heavy recoiling rifles, its not good for accuracy and it's hard to get over it

If You lived out west and 1000 yd ranges where the norm and long long range hunting shots could be possible, hell try the .300 Win Mag, here in the Gulfsouth, 600 yd ranges are more common and shorter range hunting shots are the norm. I love shooting, reloading, and competiting with my .308

The only reason I'm not interested in a .308 is that it's not different enough from the .30/06s I already have to justify adding another caliber to the 17 in my inventory.

Get both of them... You will enjoy them both...But i prefer my 308 over my 300win mag any day... 300 win i use specifically for hunting...308 i use to nail steel at 700-1000...All in what is your sole purpose for the rifle...

Go with the .308. Deer will hate it but your shoulder will love you. Seriously, the .308 will be adequate for all shots/situations that most deer hunters should ever attempt. If it is too far for a .308, you should probably try to ship closer. It does it all cheaper, with less recoil, etc. Merry Christmas

I agree with most, the 308 would be my choice between the two. I have been hunting with the same 308. (Remington 700 bdl) since 1972 and it is still my favorite rifle. I have many others and ocassionally use them to be different but don't feel as confident. I'm sure it's all in my head though.

Split the difference and buy a Rem 700 Sendero in 338 WinMag.

Just got this .308 a month or so ago. Recoil is not bad, suppose the Hogue Pad helps quite a bit. 100 yds is about a 2 " group and improving. Also bulk ammo is availabe and way cheaper than 25 buks for 20 rounds

Heres link to the ballistcs if you don't have them, it will do comparisons as well. I would take the 308 over a basket of 30 06's

ETA : Just refreshed my own self on the 06 vs 308 ballistics...they are not near as far apart as I thought ...still the ammo price/availability was the main deciding factor for me, plus I really liked the 700 SPS itself.

.300 win mag really comes into play for ranges greater than 600 yards. In Louisiana, get the .308. If you are on the plains, then .300 isnt bad. Hard to say because you didnt mention what your purposes are.

FYI, I am very happy with my .300 win mag Savage 110BA with Nightforce scope.
