    Good day,

I've got a Garand chambered in .308. My question is about ammo selection. I know the answer is going to depend on a whole lot, but do you think 7.62x51 can be shot through it? I did take it to the range once and on my first time shooting it the op rod broke with .308 SP Winchester ammo. I took it to Jim's and got a new rod. I haven't shot it since, but would like to know what it's rated for and what could have caused the op rod to break.

the ammo in an M1G is typically recommended to be a slower burning powder.. I know the 06' needs to be a slow burning powder and is a special load if modern manufacturers load for it, they specify garand ammo. I suspect 308 is the same.. You should buy an adjustable gas plug for it.. shuster nut.. also read up on some of the military forums..

    Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't shot it in a while. The barrel has .308 on it. I'll have to get to it tomorrow, but I don't think it says anything else. I'm not near the original op rod but will be this weekend. I got the op rod replaced and it should work fine if the correct ammo is used.

Anyone want a .308 Garand? I'll post some pictures later. I'm more of a handgun guy and I probably don't want to put any more money into it, or search around for the right ammo.

+1 for the adj. gas plug. When I can't shoot my reloads in my Garands 308 and 06 with an adjustable gas plug i can shoot off the shelf ammo all day long with no problems

Id put money on the op rod breaking in that it was a re furb and poorly welded somewhere. Where was the break, any pics of the broken rod? SLow burning powders bend op rods, not break them.
Yes 762x51 is safe to shoot in a garand, they were actually designed for it.
Stay with 147gr ball or 168gr match for ammo.
