If I had to only have one gun, it would be a 3" or 4" .357 S&W K frame.

I concour. I like my 6 inch. My dad calls it my hog leg. LOL

I don’t understand the correlation between a large revolver and a hog leg :squint:. Can someone please explain this one to me? That one has been puzzling me for a while now

I've fooled around with a pretty fair number & variety of firearms & calibers over the years, but also find myself more interested in .38 revolvers now than ever before. I've reduced my accumulation of guns to little else these days. The most practical single gun I own is the ultimate "vanilla" revolver: a 4" blued Model 10, .38 SPL :-) It may be the most practical single firearm I've ever owned, for that matter.

For concealed carry, which has only been an issue with me for about a year now, nothing beats a J frame .38. I actually carry a .38 S&W (not 38 SPL) for several reasons I won't bore you with here, but it's only practical for me because I cast & reload. Otherwise, .38 SPL for me, hands down. There is a reason these K and J frames were on so many LEOs' hips over many decades, and my personal needs are still served well by them. I know that's not the case for everybody, but I'm happy.

Now I'll go try to figure out the etymology of "hogleg." :-)

I also cast, and reload for .38 spl, and .357, (among other calibers).

Cujo, If you want to come over and use my equipment, my shop is air conditioned, there's a TV, (very small), and plenty of brass laying around you could try your hand at stuffing.

I mailed in my CCW permit application today and plan on carrying a 9mm but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a .38 its all about what you shoot best (for me it was the 9mm) but if its the .38 for you then by all means stick with it. It's certainly capable, and remember: "if it can't be settled in 5 shots it probably can't be settled" (forgot who said that).

Cookoff. You and I have the same gun. I also carry 158 hp swc lead with gas checks. The old FBI load. The only difference is mine has the hammer bobbed.

My most common carry is the Colt Cobra. But if I need to put something in my pocket or the weather sucks rocks I reach for the Model 36.

I had a cobra loved it , but I had to sell it during some hard times when I was going to school after the military..

Whats the going price on the 36's now days? I saw one in a Pawn in great condition but thought it may have been a little high.

I agree; were I stripped away of all but heel guns, I would want a .357 Ruger SP101 with a four-inch (or three inch) barrel. Hardly "inadequate" with proper mindset and training.

I do not know the going price for them Today.
I sold all my older model clean low round count J frames several years ago for less than $300 each.
