    Hi
I aquired an American Derringer Model M-4 Alaskan Survival derringer in a trade.
Chamberd top 45-70 bottom 45-410 ammo

I must ask has anyone seen or shot a 45-70 round out of a derringer????

Can 45-70 be reloaded with a lighter grain powder?

Any advise or help would surely be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Snookie

note the bigger grips in the you tube video. i would strongly recommend to you to get a set. They made a big difference in holding on to the 2 bond arms derringers i had shooting 45lc.

American derringer pistols are very nice though. I have even seen one chambered in .223.

Personally, I don't think something like that should be manufactured. However, it is called the Alaskan Survival for a reason. If you are ever in big bear country and for some strange reason you only have the derringer with you, and you are attacked by a monster, then you would use that gun regardless of how it might recoil.

    Otherwise, don't shoot it.

Have yet to see any bear's in my travels along the highway and byways of Louisiana, however; will keep it as a motorcycle gun in case of LARGE COONS that I may encounter that threaten my life!

Seems like a poor design to me. The 45-70 has a lot of powder to burn. The Derringer has a barrel that's a few inches long. It won't produce anything near the power that a 45-70 rifle is capable of. The muzzle blast alone might scare away the bear though!

Barrell is 4" long same length as my Colt Defender if that helps and the defender is chambered in 45 ACP:D

I have shot 45-70 hand guns before but never in a derringer. Not entirely sure I would want to either.

I have my share of hand cannons but darn.

You can reload with lighter loads.

    M-4 Alaskan Survival - .45 Colt/.410

    Length: 6 inches
    Barrel: 4.1 inches
    Weight: 16.5 oz.
    Standard Grips: Rosewood
    Click for Grip Options
Finish: Satin or High Polish Stainless Steel
    2-shots with automatic barrel selection.
All American Derringers are equipped with a manually operated Hammer Block type safety. The safety automatically disengages when the hammer is cocked.

Went and looked the model up and it shoots a 45colt / 410

Shot one of these last night...This is a ridiculous, dangerous gun. I fired once at a target 10ft away. Even managed to hit it. Badly bruised my 2nd knuckle while holding on with both hands. Didn't bother with a 2nd shot.
