whats the point of pre bidding on this site?

From what I've seen, the bidding on the internet site is held simultaneously with the on-site auction. Realistically if you bid a certain amount in a pre-bid and no one at the on-site auction wants to bid higher then you win the auction. I've been at one of the auctions where the auctioneer is receiving bids from the audience and from the internet at the same time. Whoever bids highest wins.
