Good afternoon all. I am not very knowledgable on this one. My grandfather has willed me a late 1800s model Richards 10 GA double barrel. Hasn't been shot in over 100 years so my grandfather claims and I'm sure it hasn't fired modern rounds since there is very little play between the barrel and the breach. Barrel has some pitting near the breach and of course the stock is worn. Richards Dustin's Phone pics 1433.jpgDustin's Phone pics 1421.jpg is barely visible on the sides of the breach. There is deafinately no W on there so its not the Belgian replica. I just want to know what kind of an antique I'm looking at. Anyone have any info let me know.

There was a Richardson of London making shotguns circa 1900 or so. If the gun is British, there should be small proofmarks somewhere on the barrel. "BP", "NP", "SP", and crown marks are usually British.

There is a small dime sized brass circle in the bottom of the bp that may have been a proof marker at one time but is so faded you can't tell what it is now its so faded

You have a shot gun that will require physical therapy after you shoot it. PM me after you shoot it. LOL

From what I know the gun I have won't be able to handle a moder round without stretching the reciver from the breach. To shoot it I would have to reload a 10 GA round with black powder. Modern gun powder is just too strong for the older guns. Plus I don't want to depreciate the value on it. I imagine it it's day it was a heck of a goose gun though.

Anywhere on the barrel with twist or laminate marked? If the barrels are smooth and don't have a pattern that encircles them then they aren't damascus. If they aren't rusted over then it is pretty easy to see the "coils".

Its definately an old wire twist barrel. You can see the ridges. Like I said the barrel has some bitting on it but its not rusted. Its been sitting in a gun case for about the last 60 or 70 years. What does it mean if its a damascus barrel?

I really appreciate it bud. Thanks. It wouldn't matter to me if it was worth 2 cents or 2 million. Its been past through my family to the oldest grandchild for a long time. I would just like to get an idea on the worth for insurance purposes.
