Looking for a Residential Electrician to answer a couple questions. I'm wanting to replace an existing recessed can light with a ceiling fan and am not sure what route I want to take and could use some advice/ideas. Here or PM is cool.
Your gonna need a brace and a 4square box where you want the fan. The can light is wired directly and probably hanging from Sheetrock ceiling.
Let me know if you don't figure it out. I done electric work for 8+ yrs.
Another electrician here. Armnhammer is spot on. Your going to need a Fan box brace kit. It comes in one box at the hardware store. You cut power, double check that it is cold. remove the old light. install brace. route wires through 4 square box. Repair drywall. Then mount and install fan as usual. Good luck.
Do this frequently, most time consuming part is the ceiling repair and painting. On some huge ceilings that the customer didn't want to paint I installed one of those small round ceiling medallions they have at Lowes and painted it to a close match to the ceiling color.
