My Dad and I have always said that we wanted to make a Bear hunt one of these days. I am 1/2 way finished with School, and I am thinking about taking my dad after finishing school in '11. So, I have plenty of time to research and plan.

This brings me to my first round of questions. Where have you been? What caliber did you use? Any luck? Tips for researching?

I'm just starting to look into it, but I really hope to make this one happen in the next few years.

First thing you need to do is pick a guide. Some, if not all, will have a minimum caliber requirement. I guy that used to work with me had to have a .375H&H at minimum. He went to Alaska and killed a 7 foot tall monster with one shot.

I've never been black bear hunting but when I lived in southeast AK I knew several people that used 30-06's. In some my older reloading manuals they have 6.5mm rounds as being sufficient for black bear so you may not necessarily have to go the big boomers. On the other hand, it's still a friggin bear you're shooting at!! If it were me I'd probably go with a 35 Whelen or 350 rem mag. I would be interested to hear what the guides in that area say.
