I'm wanting to put together an AR pistol. Can someone clarify on the requirements or point me in the right direction to find them. I have a stripped lower that I'm wanting to use that I acquired in a trade.

So as long as the lower was purchased as a pistol lower you are fine. If on the 4473 it said long gun then legally that it what it is supposed to be. Now you have to ask yourself if I build this into a pistol and use it within all legal parameters will anything ever come of it. I personally would just build my pistol and be happy. The barrel length though has to be shorter than 10 or so inches. I can't remember the law. Foot the ATF website and it will help you

Stripped Lowers are purchased as "Other" these days, and that's the only way you're supposed to transfer them since 2008, iirc.

Barrel length doesn't matter, there is no maximum and certainly no minimum for a handgun. There have been novelty handguns with 18" barrels before. Well.. they may have a real purpose not be novelty, but to me they are :P

You should buy a 'pistol receiver extension' like this one from PSA http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/lower-parts/pistol-buffer-kit.html but there are a variety out there, some with padded tubes or different textures, whatever.

There's a thread on arfcom that has a pretty extensive list and more importantly, I think it has pretty decent citations on the rules and reasons: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_122/...feel_free_to_add_comments_and_questions_.html

Here's a thread with scans of ATF letters as they relate to AR15 pistols: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_122/...om_the_BATFE__that_pertain_to_AR_pistols.html
