Just thought I would post a couple photos of my backyard project.
Got 48 cross ties stacked and bolted to 6 creosote post on the back side.
We are about 8 1/2 feet high, 17 foot wide at the wall and 23 feet wide at the front of the wings.
Now to get my dirt hauled in and piled up against the wall.

Very nice! Where did you get the cross ties?

Sand works better than dirt. Dirt can have voids. Sand collapses to fill in and keeps a better base to stop bullets.

The ties came from a lumber yard in Jackson, MS.
Closest we could find, out of the 48 maybe 6 had holes where spikes had been. Everyone of them still solid.

Get dirt higher than planned. I lost about two feet the first year and had to build my berm back up. It still probably needs a few more feet.

I'm expecting lots of settling with this much dirt; were adding a short retaining wall across the front once some of the fill is in place.
There will be some tractor and shovel fill material maintenance involved

Did you pack down the existing grade before piling all that dirt on top? It's not necessary, but would help reduce the settling somewhat.

The site is the end of an old field road that has been unmolested for 50 years plus; it's packed.
The couple inches of rain we got last week settled it about 5 inches.
While I was loading the fill I tamped everything down with the tractor bucket and drove the front wheels of the tractor as high up the incline as possible. Next is to square up the dirt in front and lay a double layer of cross ties across the front.
All the fill that's removed from the front is going back up top.
