Obviously, since anyone that is reading this isn't a hermit, have you ever known anyone to completely go off the grid. Just disappear in the woods and only occasionally come out? With the state of current affairs I've been giving this some serious thought.

I know a guy that pretty much lives in the Red River WMA.
I don't even know where he gets money from.

But he sure don't by much of nothing but ammo
    and stuff for his garden.

    Probably :D

Sounds like 4x4Demon just needs a hobby.

    If I were you I would;

    Get off the Internet!
Once you're home, turn your Cell Off.
    Hunt/Fish/Exercise/Read/Plant a Garden/Buy a pet

The closer I get to doing that, the more happy I find myself.

The past few weekends I try and NOT turn on my Home PC at all.
If I do, I'm drawn to stop by it and pop a squat....for an hour....lol

But NOTHING can refresh the mind like the Outdoors.
    No rush...just chilling. Swimming in a River/Creek.
    Making a fire, grilling something.

I can see myself doing something similar soon.
This fall I'll likely be unplugging from the internet social media (Facebook to Forums)
b/c I'm supposed to start taking classes. I won't have time to waste.

I'm pretty much looking forward to it though.
It's amazingly refreshing to unplug for a weekend, For a list of reasons.
I can't imagine detoxing myself from internet disease for months on in.
    I'm intrigued by the idea.

    Damn that sounds nice.

I haven't done anything but work it seems for the past few months.

Have two new rifles sitting in the safe that haven't had any rounds put threw them...

I am making it a priority this weekend to get out and fish and shoot.

Is there any fishing towards Honey Island swamp?

I'll spend the morning fishing and the rest of the day shooting if I can.

Sounds like me. I am going Friday thru Monday on a fishing / chilling in the woods trip with my buddies. But my phone will be "attached to me" the whole time. I don't like losing touch with the rest of the world ;)

I would love to get a nice piece of property for a hurricane retreat and set everything up to completely live off the grid out there. Heck, I might have to if everyone around looses power.

I'm as introverted as they come. Somehow ended up married and have a 5 yr old son. My wife is slowly becoming more like me, hating going out in public, being close to strangers etc. I couldn't take the normalcy away from my son but I could easily drift off into the woods without looking back if it wasn't for them.

Try contacting Nomad,2nd . He's working on it.

    Eh, "Hermit light"

I only want to spend about 1/2 the year on my land.
(That's what I did last year, and I'd be doing the same right now if it wasn't for medical...)

I went to town 1x week-1x10 days. some of my neighbors go to town 1x/month or less.
(I had building materials etc to buy)

The problem you run into is taxes.

If you own land (And if you don't... you have other problems)
You have to pay taxes. This requires outside income. But not necessarily a large amount of income.

I COULD (Once I finish setting up my place) live there on my (Small) military pension... but I like 3 things too much.
Also... 20-30 years from now is to be considered.

Many people who do what you outline live without many creature comforts I enjoy (Hot showers, internet, electricity etc.)

There are steps which can be taken.

Bought land in an area with Very low taxes, adequate growing season, (That's another thing... bread, lettuce, even fruit go bad when you are away from a grocery store that long.some things you can do like canning... but both to enjoy fresh, high quality foods, as well as keeping costs down I have been, and plan to continue to plant perennials.
(I suggest you look into Permaculture.)

Solar is cheap now (La has a 1 time refund, and there's a 30% annual federal rebate) AND is warrantied for 80-90% 20-25 years from purchase.
Edison batteries have a strong appeal, and I had planned to be testing this year. I'll need to next year.
-One of the reasons I'm so interested in off grid is the monthly bills. The cost of power +$30+/month "Connection fee" adds up on a small income.
    (LED "Ropes" are great)

Have plans for a $2,500/5-6K Gal Cistern, that with the runoff from my letal roof and the 2-4 GPM well should be more than ample. (Another summer project which will be bumped to next year)

Went far enough north to not need AC excepting a couple days per year. (Being on a mtntop and wind all spring/summer helps)

Once I get the woodstove set up in the building... I'll be able to stay there all winter.

    Back to neighbors:
Many who choose to live that way live POOR.
One of my neighbors is off the grid also.
He moved up there (To land he owned) and lived in a Tipi for the winter while he built a one room cabin.
Now it's a 3 room cabin on 14 acres with a pond, barn etc... (And still off grid)

he goes to town 1x month, and works 3-4 months a year. has more solar than I have on my Airstream (I have 300W... i can go into that if you like) and runs the generator about 1x/week to give the batteries a "Hard charge"

Don't know what else to say, If you'd like I'd be happy to blabber on about it. (As should be obvious)
