best youth shotgun

Thinking to save a little coin, I'd buy a youth shotgun instead of a tricked out tactical shotgun for home defense. I'm leaning toward the 870 but was wondering if there were any other economical choices out there besides Rem and Moss.

If you're look for cheap, the H&R Pardner Pump is a 870 clone.
It's not as smooth as a 870 but it works fine and has the extended tube.

There's plenty of cheap shotguns available. The Pardner pump as whitsend has mentioned is 1, and there's also the Maverick 88, which is a Mossberg 500 clone. That's what I currently have for HD. There's also quite a few others as well.

However, if you do decide to buy your kid a shotgun for hunting, I stand by my recommendation.

Sorry to bust your chops a little bit. I do have two boys that will probably use it to hunt with but they are years away from that.

How are the Charles Daly shotguns? I'm not familiar with them and in my search for something for my wife, another member has offered me a 20ga Hunter model.

I'd rather see you buy a pawn shop 870 or Mossy than a cheap new off brand. If you want short then cut the stock down some. YOu can always pick up a synthetic later or add a recoil pad.

I picked up the H&R youth 20 at BPS for 200. It shoots great and feels good in my hand, No pun intendend. I'm happy with my choice. The 870's and Brownings that I have dont shoot any better than this one does.
