Just read "AK-47 The Story of a Gun". By Micheal Hodges. The first couple of chapters are very interesting. The author interveiws Mikhail Kalashnikov at his home in russia and the story of a young tank commander and mechanical genius is very eye opening, esp the part of WHY he decided to build his gun and how his design was picked, considering the very experienced engineers who also put designs in. The author is a journalist by trade and has gone to Pakistan,Iraq,Africa and many other war-torn countries and conflicts to witness the AK in action. This book is more a look at the gun as a symbol and what is signifies to the peaple using it.
Saddly he is a bit left leaning, He bashes Presidents Bush and Reagan. The GUN CLUBs of America with there "overweight beer drinking gun lovers" (He's from Great Britain by the way) He not too keen on American military might, saying about the BlackHawk Down incident that "the best weapon in Somalia was the AK".
Its an interesting story either way. But his obvious, dare I say, symphathy for the peaple who use this weapon for bad is kinda long winded and a bit well, frustriating. By the way the last chapter is called Bustin' Niggas, about the gangs of New Orleans and the role of the AK too "neglected blacks left to fend for themselves" after Katrina.
There are a lot of examples of gun violence in america, but there is a really good chapter on the life of child soldiers in africa, and other hotspots around the globe. If your interested in the gun your sure to find something in this book to please you,are **** you the hell off!!! it was released in 2007 originally in Great Britain under the title AK47 The Story of a Peaples Gun.
