Thought you guys and gals might find this interesting.

Was up at my girlfriend's family cabin this weekend, which was originally owned by her grandfather. He had passed a few years ago, so we were looking over some of his belongings that had been in storage for years.

Long story short, I stumbled upon (among other things) a build your own Colt 1851 Navy black powder revolver kit!

Has anyone seen one of these before? I'm interested in knowing the history behind these, hadn't found anything with my amateur google-fu.

Good to know. Thanks much! If it's not rare in any way, I'll probably see if I can build it, and put it in a shadow box or something similar for a family heirloom.

That's really cool! Once they are built are they durable at all? I'm tempted to get one just for the fun factor, but it would be a bonus if it was able to last....

They used to sell those at Service Merchandise (kind of like target for the kids that don't remember it). A friend bought one and we shot it some. Accuracy was minute of sheet of plywood at 50'... but it was fun to shoot.

Hell you could buy then at Sears, Wal-Mart, Woolco, western auto and every lgs on earth. Most wear produced buy no name company’s. Bought my first handgun thatway. Got from Woolco in Chalmette when I was around 16 years old and that was back in the late 60's.
