    I think the most important thing is there were people willing to spend time to teach/guide the journalist.

    If they ever have to skin a deer, they now know how.:D
    But newcomers like us face an uphill battle: There is no established route for an outsider to learn how.
    ...
    For hands-on practice, we would have to find mentors. Our first was Mark Spangler, executive director of the Illinois Conservation Foundation. He invited us to the Torstenson Family Youth Conservation Education Center in Pecatonica, and put guns into our frightened hands.
