I agree. I've been heavily involved in parades (behind the scene work) and (sadly) a church is considered a business. They are on a permitted route, which a group or organizations has paid for, and they are out there "promoting their business". easy fix. Get a permit.

I think it's pretty obvious that they didn't have the proper permits and anyone out there without the proper permits would have been treated the same way regardless of their religious affiliation.

this pretty much sums it up for me:

“This is a perfect example of why so many people have a problem with big government,” Klukowski said. “The idea that a church needs a permit to hand out water to thirsty people is unfortunate.”

I do not agree that a church is a business. Neither does the federal gov't or it wouldn't issue tax exempt; 501(c)3 status. They were not selling anything, so there wouldn't be any tax, unless you want the recipient to claim the value of the water on his taxes. Either way, IMHO it's absurd.

I bet if a natural disaster was to hit again the gov. will not tell them they cant give free water, clothes, money, shelter, and help with clean up.
I agree with that, however, these parade goers chose to attend the parade. Shame on them if they cant provide for themselves.

does anyone posting to this thread really believe the church was passing out water because they were afraid people were about to drop from dehydration? they were there trying to spread the word of God and inviting people to their church and/or their website through a random act of kindness, or an act of kindness to random people, however you want to look at it.

they did offer to help pick up trash and clean the portable toilets, but the government gave them the run around..

Most of the religious organizations I have seen in New Olreans around Mardi Gras weren't doing anything to help their cause. My cousin (Young lady) had water ( supposed "Holy" water) thrown at her and was called a slut for getting her beads. She just happened to be their with my Large Italian family (Large in more than one way) and the religious group decided it wasn't a good idea to mess with my cousin anymore. For the record, she obtained all her beads respectfully.

This is a prime example how far out of reality government regulation has gone. Citizens/organizations cannot give water away or donate their time to help reduce government spending. They are even trying to tell parents what to pack in their kids lunches. Pretty soon they will limit television time, internet time, tell us how many miles a year we can drive, etc. Where does the BS end?

I do think religious organizations are businesses but that is another argument.

It is absolutely absurd that a Church can not hand out water whenever and to whomever they wish.

What sad times in which we live. The government has a vested interest in being the sole provider of free stuff. He who controls the means controls the way.

Because most of them ARE and they should pay taxes as such ...........

are you guys talking about the mega-churches like the ones under the likes of Joel Osteen, Benny Hinn and Jimmy Swaggart? I know that at the small Baptist church I belong to, we do not show a profit, which is what a "business" is supposed to do. Now it is RUN like a business organization, but everything is, including most people's home finances, with the same exception of not showing a profit.

there are over-zealous kooks everywhere, and Christianity is obviously not exempt. I doubt the church passing out the bottled water was throwing it at people...

Yeah the bIG Organizations, you should see the one that they have in Guatemala is a freaking city inside the city. To be able to acces church grounds you have to pass armed guards who check your car with dogs for explosives, they have 300 security personnel on pay roll and Mr."I speak to God personally" moves via helicopter and when he does have to "drive" he is escorted by 4 bullet proof suburbans.

The last renovation to his "holly city" was worth 4.7 MILLION DOLLARS, but yet Guatemala is a third world country dying of poverty .............

Ole boy is not required to pay taxes since its all "donations", .........

I understand there are still a few ones out there that actually do it for a cause, but the rest who EXPECT it are a bunch of jokes.

Eventhough this is totally OFF topic :)
