If the stock has an oil finish , that cosmo has soaked in . If it's shellac , ( very probable if it's a Russian capture ) then it should come off with mineral spirits or some other solvent . Here's a good place to find out about Mausers . http://k98kpage.yuku.com/

Put the stock in the dishwasher and tell us how it works out. No Im not kidding, I read about it on surplusrifle.com, dont tell the wife if you plan on doing it. Always better to ask forgiveness instead of permission.

The dishwasher does work very well. use regular dishwashing soap but on
pot scruber leve in all night to dry. I do this all the time it works
very well. And it will not hurt the dishwasher or the stock.

Wife should not mind. It is OK.:)

I used brake parts cleaner on metal parts.......it worked pretty good

    +1

Brake cleaner costs about $2 per can, and it takes one can per gun to get all the metal really clean. For the wood, heat works great. The last cosmoline-soaked stock I got I washed with hot soapy water and a Dobie pad that I bought for washing dishes. It took about 30 minutes, and it did a tolerable job. No cosmoline left on the surface, but after some shooting, out came the stuff from deep in the grain.

In the past I've soaked the entire stock in lacquer thinner for a week. EVERYTHING came out. There was NO cosmoline left anywhere in the stock.

OK, so after i strip all the cosmo off and clean up Everything....

Should i GunKote it for maximum protection?

I did not buy this gun to look at it, i intend to shoot it. (but not sporterize it)

Im thinking either Duplicolor Engine Enamel 1200 degree rated, or gun kote on all the metal pieces (barrel, sling mount, bolt (if possible) trigger guard Etc.

I really dont want to have to worry about this gun rusting from sitting in my room.
Plus i think it would make it look brand new if i did it all in black (or did they come blued?)
