Va. couple accidentally shot at gun safety class Published April 24, 2012
    Associated Press

ROANOKE, Va. – A Roanoke, Va., man and his wife were recovering after he accidentally shot himself and her during a firearms safety class.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that Michael L. Deel shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun. The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence. The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a "stupid accident."

This is why ammo shouldn't be allowed off the range in gun courses...dummy rounds or nothing. Or, some people just need keep their damn finger off the trigger.

I'm thinking hard, but I can't recall seeing *ANY* firearm related materials on the desk during our class.

    blue gun, ammo, actual handgun…

Maybe the instructor's. Maybe. But I think the pocket contents demonstration even then was pepper spray during the "what else can you do before you shoot" portion.

Yup, when I took my class last month, there was absolutely NO live ammo allowed in the classroom area of the home, and it made perfect sense to me. Maybe the instructor in this case will take a lesson from this and do the same.

I am not sure why the instructor allowed students to bring their pistols into the classroom without checking them at the door. Both courses I've taken as a civilian didn't allow them at all.

During the range portion of my CHP course, my guy told our class that if anyone accidentally points a loaded gun at him he was going to shoot that person. :dunno:
