Anybody use/carry DRT (Dynamic Research Technology) ammo? I've seen it for sale at a LGS and watched a few youtube vids on it but haven't heard any firsthand experience. The theory of it seems kind of cool. The inner core is compressed metal powder that basically breaks up (frangible) once the round penetrates the body. Seems like a great idea to eliminate any chance of over-penetration, but I'd be slightly nervous to carry an 85 grain 9mm HP that hasn't been proven through use like our Federal, Speer, Winchester etc has.

    Any thoughts?

The round labeled "C" is the DRT round.

]I like it and carry it. At one point in time no ammo was "proven". Every thing has a time and place. This is designed for minimum penetration 1-1.5 inches then rapid expansion. For CQB in my book nothing better.

I see you carry a gun for a living in your profile. What happens if you have to shoot through a barrier?

I don't know about their pistol ammo, but I lean toward "gimmick" from what I saw.

I don't know what their hunting bullets are like, but the DRT hunting ammo is supposedly decent. I think I got some .223 hunting ammo coming from a guy as part of a trade. I'm curious about it. I've heard a few unconnected comments claiming it performed well. Looks to be the same compressed/bonded/sintered frangible powder though. Maybe it's less shitty at 3,000 FPS versus 900-1300 fps. I don't know. I'm skeptical but eh, I'm curious enough to see what it does in person rather than just 'hearing about it'.

I think the thread title says it all. I'll go with "proven", thanks.

And DRT is nothing new. If it worked at all some agency somewhere would've adopted it by now.

Gelatin tests only establish a comparison point and have little to do with actual bullet performance in the human body. If it only penetrates gelatin that little, no way in hell it's making it through bone, muscle, etc enough to hit any vital organs. Might make a good less-than-lethal round though... :D

Over penetration? Really? I never worry about it for a normal handgun round. I just don't see it as a tremendous problem for them. I worry about making sure I have ENOUGH penetration from handgun rounds.
