I took my son to Honey Island back in February. He had a blast and said he really enjoyed shooting.

Yesterday, though, I asked if he wanted to go again this weekend and he told me, "No, because it's too loud."

He didn't complain about it being loud when we went. I had ear plugs in his ears and ear muffs on top of those.

Is there anything you guys can recommend for him?

Maybe he was talking about the percussion felt by the shooting and not by the sound itself. A 5 year old might not be able to describe it as anything else

Humans are only born with 2 fears. Falling and loud noises.

Don't force him to go if he doesn't want to. Like Veed said, play with the quiet things first and move him into something louder, later.

What has worked well for me with my 5 year old is ear plugs the orange 30db reducing ones I think I got from Cabelas they are Radians brand 25 pair in a jar for $12 then a pair of Peltor electronic earmuffs. He is very noise sensitive but this combination has worked at a covered range and for a monster truck jam in the BR Centroplex.

Are there age specific ear muffs ? I only remember seeing one-size-fits-all. If they do not seal well all around the ear then they are worthless.
Adult muffs may not fit a five year old head.

I've only ever seen adult muffs. But that's why I doubled up with the plugs.

    I wouldn't force things.

I would suggest trying to find some of the molded plugs in small. A lot of them are sized. Check with a safety supply company.

Maybe try the electronic ones and just .22s next time so he realizes it isn't that bad. After that slowly move up to something louder.

I'd also make sure he keeps both on even when the line is cold.. If you're at the HI pistol line and the rifle is still hot, it can still be loud. Don't know if he did, but if he saw you remove your 'ears' he might have done the same.
