I am looking for a good place to get a deal on a FAL. DS Arms has them for like $1700, but I'm looking for cheaper even if I have to go kit/receiver individually. What is your experience?

With a kit build and a good receiver, you will have a rifle every bit as good as an original FN FAL.
If you can find one, an Imbel or Argentine receiver are probably the best, and Coonan receivers are made here in the US, and are exceedingly high quality also. Just do not get swindled on a parts kit. I've seen STG kits on Gunbroker for 1K lately.. that is ridiculous.
Another thing to consider is that all of the noted FALsmiths are backed up for many months with business, so if you are going to do it yourself you will also need some specialized tools to complete your build.

Sorry for the delay guys. I don't have any specialized tools for gunsmithing, and you are right FAL experts are in short supply right now. Is there anywhere to find the rifle for a decent price not 1700-2100? Is anyone selling one? I'm looking for something a little bit cheaper than. I have seen some on the internet (used) for 1000-1300.

Depends on what level of quality you are willing to pay for. If you join Fal Files there are frequently (or were before the current madness hit) Fal builds for sale for less than the owner has in the rifle. If you want a basic range banger, Century Fal builds can be had for less than 1K..frequently in the 6-800 range. Be advised that Century's angry beavers can knock together a FAL with the same lack of precision as their infamous AK products. Entreprise FAL's are also often found for less than 1K, but their receivers can be a real horror story--and while on this topic, avoid at all costs Hesse receiver builds. If you are looking for a better quality build, there are many FAL's built on good receivers ( Imbel, Argy FMAP, Coonan, DSA) with a mix of parts (FrankenFAL's) from different countries/variants which will turn up on the gun auction sites. Many fine riFAL builds can be found in the 1K-1400 price range, just inspect the receiver, barrel condition and chamber Throat Erosion, and get a set of go/no go gauges to test headspace. I do not know what the current panic state has done for FAL prices but do NOT get suckered into paying twice what a FAL is worth just because you are impulsive.

I got a deal on here for a STG58 on a DSA receiver with a dozen mags and 200 rounds for $1200. With a little work it has turned into a great shooter and is a keeper (thanks Kajuntriton). They can be found if you look long and hard enough. I'm not seeing the current madness affecting FAL prices as bad as ARs and AKs.

Thanks again guys, I can always count on you all to respond quickly with professional advice. I am looking roughly 1000-1400, so I will investigate all of those brands. I signed up for falfiles.com, and will be at the Ponchatrain Center tomorrow just for shits and gigs.

    NOLA/Northshore!
Like others have said, look on falfiles and look for quality. If you need any help with anything, let me know. I am one of the first members of the falfiles and have built dozens of FALs over the past 20 years.

Stay away from Kajuntriton. He's bad news. I was happy with one FAL. Went over to his place to work on it. Ended up with another. It just won't stop. I think he put something in the drink he gave me.

You are just WEAK my friend.....you must be strong!!

Another Build.......on a Coonan Type I but due to the rare hard to find parts this was over $1500 in just parts before the receiver and refinish paint again by Tcustomsllc.com and partial OEM park......

I have to second Seventh's comments. Though I've never met Kajuntriton, all his FAL porn finally caused me to go to FAL Files and buy a STG58.

To be fair, I should throw Blue Monster under the bus too. The walnut pistol grip and C stock kinda made it hard to resist.

BLUE MONSTER is the BEST of the BEST!! Super guy as well!!!

He actually has a few of my projects as we speak, some new, some just applying TLC to very old wood making it clean and refreshed!!!
