Terry said he has a permit to carry a gun.
"You never know when somebody is going to walk up to your car and being that it's an extension of your home in the state of Louisiana, it's definitely something to have as protection. A lot of people I know usually leave them in their vehicle,” Terry said.
WDSU crime and safety specialist Howard Robertson said the problem is when the stolen guns turned up again.
"Most guys that break into cars are not murderers and armed robbers, but they steal the gun and then they sell it," said Robertson. "And then, the gun ends up being used in a crime somewhere.
    "

This in itself is more of a reason than any for states promoting and allowing more and easier access for Concealed Carry Permits. If more people had permits for CCW they would not have to leave the weapons in their cars,,,,hence the criminals would have less opportunity to steal said weapons.

Looks like a Sig to me. Probably cocked and locked. I'd think that squad cars would have some extra safety precautions to getting into their trunks, compared to a normal car ... considering what they carry in there.

Criminals are getting bolder and bolder. They used to head the other way when they saw a patrol car, now they walk up and break into it.

looked like a Berretta or Taurus .22 or .25,,,,and I'm guessing it's a single action. In any case,,,why leave a gun in the car if you have a permit ?

My bad,,,NOT what I thought it was. When I went to full screen I could tell I was wrong about it being a Berretta or Taurus. I am not sure about what kind of gun it is.

And yea,,,you would think they would at least disconnect the trunk button or wire it so that it will only operate with "key On"
You know this sort of thing has been happening for years now. You hear about it all of the time,,,,guns stolen from cop cars or cop homes.

Unfortunately, if you catch someone breaking into your car, and you're not in it, you can't use your gun against him.

Go a little further if you are in your car and someone is beating on it with a tire tool and it is running and you can drive away you have a means to leave without using deadly force you had better drive or stand the chance of being arrested for protecting your property which is an extension of your home.....

Yeah, I know a few LEOs who also use the term. In fact, there's only ONE person who I have ever heard say that your car IS NOT an extension of your home... and he is the resident know-it-all on this board.

That's just like saying if someone is trying to kick down your door and you can run out of the back door and get away you better.

    This is what LSP says.

    Q. Can I carry my handgun in my vehicle?

    A. Under most circumstances, carrying a handgun in a motor vehicle is legal in Louisiana. We suggest that you refer to Louisiana Revised Statutes (L.R.S.) Title 14 Sections 95; 95.1; 95.2; 95.6; 95.7; 95.8. Information on these statutes can be obtained at http://www.legis.state.la.us or in the “Laws and Rules” section of our web page (http://www.lsp.org/handguns.html).

What if you know you have guns in your vehicle, like in this instance. Should'nt the law assume that the guns may be used nefariously? A case for lethal force to protect the potential victims of these theives?

I didn't see it, but is it true that this advice (or something similar like "give them the house") was suggested to someone on an episode of "Sons Of Guns" the other day? I remember someone here saying that in another thread.

Like I say...I didn't see the episode, so I don't know in what context this advice was given....But depending on the zillions of circumstances involved.....

I don't think that would fly. Like just leave a cheap gun in your car so you can smoke anybody breaking in it?

Yeah, Will gave the couple that advice. They were inexperienced and were trying to make an impulse buy after the husband (I think?) was mugged. Will first recommended they get defensive handgun training, then followed up with the "give them the house" advice when it was apparent they weren't going to get any training. This is going from memory, of course... that was a couple of weeks ago.
