Everyone I knew growing up called them clips. A magazine was a periodical you read. I think it comes from the old "stripper clips" in war rifles that weren't fully enclosed and were only a strip of metal that the grooved part of the cartridge was loaded into. I didn't learn until I read gun periodicals (magazines ) that they were really magazines or mags, for short.

Was this anybody else's experience, or am I just crazy? I mean, I'm crazy already, but I don't think its because of this.

Close, I've always said pistols had clips and rifles had magazines.
