BR authorities offer gas for guns

Officials in Baton Rouge announced the start of a new program this morning aimed at getting guns off the streets of the city-parish.

Authorities will hold a "Gas for Guns" buyback on October 23 at four churches around East Baton Rouge Parish. People that bring in qualifying weapons will receive gas cards from Circle K worth $50 to $200, without any questions about the donors' identities or where they got the gun from.

Officials said in a press release the goal of the voluntary buyback is to get rid of unsecured weapons that could wind up in the hands of criminals.

“Unsecured guns can pose a real danger to the entire community,” said Mayor-President Kip Holden. “Every year, crimes are committed with unsecured guns that have been stolen or used without the owners’ permission.”

At a recent press conference, Police Chief Jeff LeDuff said his officers are seizing around 100 illegal guns a month in the city. District Attorney Hillar Moore said today that the more dangerous the weapon turned in, such as assault rifles and high-caliber handguns, the higher the amount people will receive.

“Getting illegal guns off the street is one step our community can take together to reduce violent crime in Baton Rouge," Moore said. "Programs like this have been highly successful in other cities, and we hope anyone with an unsecured weapon will take advantage of this opportunity to turn it in."

$40,000 in donations from Circle K Corporation and money seized in local drug cases will be used to pay for the gas cards. People will be limited to two firearms per person while the gas cards last. Shotguns and hunting rifles can also be turned in for disposal, but they will not be elligible for gas cards.

Qualifying guns can be exchanged at the following four churches on Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., or until they run out of gas certificates:

    • Greater Beech Grove Baptist Church, 5352 Ford Street
    • Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, 356 East Blvd.
    • Greater Sixty Aid Baptist Church, 655 Gardere Lane
    • Healing Place, Baton Rouge Dream Center, 4829 Winbourne

Aren't all churches gun free zones (with the exception of allowed/trained CHP holders)? Anyone else see the irony in that? Maybe it's a trap and everyone who walks up to the church with a gun gets arrested. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

EDIT: Churches are not gun free zones except for concealed carry. Thanks to yale for correcting that.

Circle k was advertising they are sponsering the buy back. They claim they only want "illegal" hand guns and "assault" rifles. You get $50 to $200 depending on the gun. Also said no questions asked, so it is the perfect time for criminals to turn in their stolen guns they used in crimes and get some gas for the hat trick.

That sucks. I've been holding on to a couple of .22 cal rifles which are all beat up and rusted. I was hoping to get some gas money for them. Oh well. I'll sell them my broken .22mag derringer.

Damn if you go into those neighborhoods you will need your gun. Got to take two guns, one to trade and one to fight your way in and out.

EVERYONE knows that shotguns and "hunting rifles" don't kill people! They basically only want to take in AK's and GLOCKS; we all know that they are the two most deadly weapons!

Is it not ironic that a church is taking guns in exchange for gas cards that people will put in their cars that claim 40,000 lives every year in the U.S., not to mention the thousands of injuries.

If you cut the barrels to below 16" and shave the stocks way down on them right before you go, that will turn them evil and you can get your $400. :naughty:

what the legal status on standing outside these churches and offering to buy these horrible guns for more than the politicians are offering? I could use a few more guns on the cheap

If they let the media run it you will be able to trade anything, remember everything is a AK.

I see in the Lake Charles paper that the reason for gas cards is so the people won't take cash and go buy another gun or drugs

Errrr....are they talking about people who buy and sell anything and everything as a way of life ?? They can sell La Purchase for 80 - 90 cents on a dollar...I would think gas cards would be no problem

Can we get a group hug and say feel good bout my self all over

Is this an example of the gun show loop hole in effect ?? Churches can buy guns w/o background ck ??
