Sorry to hear about your situation, Eric, but just remember this may be the best thing that could have happened to you.

I too recently was forced out of a job I held for 12 years, and you know what? I couldn't be happier. Found something that fits me to a tee, I make more money and I actually look forward to going to work instead of dreading it.

Things will work out, keep your head up!

Sorry to hear about the job loss. Have you tried a temp service ? We hire quite a few temps at our Dow location in weeks Island. I know several who have gotten good jobs through temps and eventually hired on full time with other companys. Give a staffing company a shout . Bet they will find something for you. Good luck.

Good luck on the search bro. I would check any hospitals near you they usually have positions available for maintenance from what I have seen they do a lot of the same stuff you did at Mc Donalds. I'll keep an eye out for anything i think you might be interested in. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Eric, sorry to hear about that man. My wife was notified 5 days before Christmas that Friday was her last day after 14yrs of service to our local hospital. Thank God, she was hired the following week with a new company and all is well right now. Six years ago, I was a manager for Wal-mart. Had been employed with them for 17yrs and sustained an injury and have to have surgery. While out on workers comp, recovering from surgery, they replaced me with another manager from north Louisiana. I was distraught and in a similar situation as you, but I found job and it worked out PERFECT for me and family, not to mention, I was rid of all the stress and corporate bs. Keep your head up and keep trusting in Him, and it will all work out for the good!

Believe In your self, and you can overcome , You can . I have done it in my life, ...and so can you....
Well I was informed friday right before quitting time that I would no longer be employed at Mcdonalds Maintenance of Baton Rouge. I was blind sided with this info. I gave these people ten good years of breaking my back and going above and beyond to only get laid off with no notice and no severance pay. The reason for letting me go was because he said the economy was affecting there business and they were downsizing. As my boss is telling me this he has a line wrapped around the store because people are trying to get a burger but the economy is hurting him. **** if anything its helping him. Anyway to make a long story short I'm in need of a new job. Christmas has just past, I just had a little baby girl and a new house. My job title at Mcdonalds was Maintenance Technician. I would perform on-going and preventive maintenance on the building, some equipment and systems. Also did the painting,tile-laying, sheetrock work, basic plumbing and carpentry. I'm a people person and work well with others. If anyone knows of someone hiring please let a fellow BS'er know.

    thanks

I really appreciate all the kind words. I've filled out various app's and I'm sure something will come along. It's just the worst feeling in the world now that I have a family and no job.

Along with what, about 200 other employees. I know 1 manager that was there for 27 years and let go, but all the Big Wheels still have their jobs! If you wife already found another job then she will probably be happier as the remaining employees are doing 2 and 3 times the amount of work now and then told to go home early when all the beds are not full. Harder and harder to make over 35 hours a week! Using, abusing and burning their employees down to the ground. Morale and "associate satisfaction" is in the toilet!! Good ole corporate America!

I been there before, just keep your head up and try not to stress too much. You'll find something, there is a big turnaround going on at Valero. If you contact RCI in the contractor yard they are looking for 150 people still for a job that has to start at January 16.

Sad to hear that. Try checking local hospitals/schools, etc. They are always in need of someone. Even better if you can get on at a local VA or something. I have a neighbor who does maintenance/janitorial work at the VA here and the benefits are great, he says.

Don't forget to follow up on those apps! Sometimes you have to all but harass them with phone-calls it seems. I know I had to do that with Chili's when I worked there. I don't know if they are just lazy, or if they want to know how bad you want the job, but it seems some places require a phone-call, or better yet, you physically THERE a few days a week to finally hire you. Chili's did that to me.

I worked for OLOL home health and watched an administrator run our department into the ground. Literally. The department was under 25% focused medical review with Medicare which is a very bad thing. OLOL ended up selling the home health department and just prior to the sale the director responsible for it's demise took a VP job in the same organization elsewhere. Go figure. Destroy a profitable productive department and get a raise. I'm glad I left never to look back and opened my own clinic. I have no regrets.

A friend of mine with nearly your exact background landed a job at a hotel in almost identical circumstances. Might be worth a try down in BR - not all that far a drive.

If there is one thing that I know for a fact is that, in this type of situation, prayer works. I've been there many times ( I'm a Pipeline Welder) in my type of work you are always looking for a Job. These jobs are always temporary. When you start a line your goal is to get to the other end and therefore out of a job. There is work out there. First things first. Get your unemployment started. ( laworks.net ). Just incase the job hunt lasts a little longer than you expected. Secondly, the post that was talking about ABC school was a good idea. They will have one of their "Contractor Sponsors" pick you up as an employee when you are finished. The Plants up and down the Miss River are always doing work. If you were to get a skill that would be prudent in an environment like that you could make a good living. When I worked the Plants I made around $100k a year. I was a Welder/Fitter. I'm not sure what you would be interested in but "Helpers" are making anywhere from $15-$20 an hour. It is just a thought.

Lastly, things will be fine. I've been where you are at many times and it will work out. Just don't take the first "we're not looking for anyone right now" for an answer. Be diligent and something will turn up. I'll keep you in prayer and God bless you and your family.
