Hazmat fees on loaded ammo?

Is there a limit to the amount you can ship before they charge hazmat? I was going to order from Mid South but when I placed a 1k bulk pack in the cart there was a $26 hazmat fee added. But when I placed 1k rnds in 20 rnd packs there is no hazmat fee. I don't do a lot of business with Mid South and am wondering if this is their way of putting something on sale and making back the price somewhere else.

Last time I bought 9mm I got 8700 rounds, no hazmat

There IS hazmat... but it's weight per container... You could have a pallet of boxes each 1 pound under the limit and it would not be hazmat.

I've got over 66,000 rounds delivered at once.... no Hazmat.

Sorry it's been a while since I took the Hazmat test, don't remember what the limit is, but you are WELL under it!
(Assuming .308 or less)
