Ok fellas, I have been asked to take down the question for now but for those who saw it before I had to remove it, I think I may have got it.
After almost 4 hours of research this is my best guess.
Versace.
Here is my logic:
In 1997 a serial killer named Andrew Cunanan began a killing spree of 5 men.
The first man he killed was named Jeff Trail. And the last man he killed was Gianni Versace.
Ok now get this...Trail was a propane sales man. And we all know Versace sold fashion.
So...
Propane:Trail :: fashion: Versace
I guess we will find out monday.
I will repost the question and answer on Monday.

For what its worth this question was posted in several other places and the most common guess was runway.

The friend who is interviewing for this job was not comfortable having it posted in a public forum. He did not ask me to and out of pure interest and excitement, I took it upon myself to post the question in a number of groups I belong to.
When guesses and questions, that I could not answer, came up. I called him to help with responses. It was then that he told me that he was uncertain of the consequences if an interviewer just happened to see he was seeking outside help. And he would feel better if I took it down untill after the interview Monday morning.
This will be his 3rd and final interview and the interviews consist of a panel of 6 people. They all ask questions and have him write code and solve all kinds of crazy problems like the question I proposed yesterday.
Anyway. Ill throw up the question and maybe a few others he had to answer on Monday.

I would say 'Style' because propane is a fuel that burns and trails are sometimes burned, not literally, but figuratively. For example, researchers are burning new trails...So, fashion, in general, is the fuel for new styles.
My gut told me it was vagina, but vagina is the first thing I think of in anything like this. I wonder if that's significant?

That's all nice and logical, but I like vagina...Uh, no, that doesn't sound weird after all.
That would make sense if you're friend was applying for a history professor job....other wise who would know that.
I think the questions designed for two reasons. One is to analyze your troubleshooting/problem solving skills. And two, applies more to all the questions as a whole. There is actually another half to the question I posted yesterday. The two questions together are supposed to relate to each other and you need to basically figure out a "key" to decipher an encryption.
The job entails code and a good bit of encryption.
