    Here's what happened:

The suspect, a twenty-something resident of Natchz, MS, was returning from a visit with relatives in Michigan, where he had purchased the vehicle he was driving when stopped for speeding by a Sheriffs Deputy in Northeast Louisiana.

The vehicle was bearing Michigan plates. In short order, the deputy sheriff established the suspect had an outstanding warrant against him, a blatant lie. The deputy refused to explain what the warrant was for, but told the suspect he could pay the $200+ speeding fine now and proceed, or be taken in for booking.

The deputy also informed the suspect that parish did not have a jail, but instead maintained a prison and implied the suspect would be held there.

The suspect did not have the full amount in cash, and requested the deputy escort him to an ATM machine, where he obtained the balance and paid the fine in cash to the deputy. It is not established if the suspect received a ticket or any type of signed receipt for the money. The suspect was then allowed to proceed.

    Comments? WTF?

Sounds completely sketchy to me. I would never give an officer cash. If he claimed I had an outstanding warrant and gave me an "out" I would stay polite, but refuse to pay and ask to be brought in. If he wwrote me a ticket, I would see his ass in court where the full story would be brought out. If he actually brought me in, I would request a phone call to contact one of my parents and tell them to find me a lawyer.

I'd have been going to "prison."

ETA: Did this happen to you? Someone you know? Is there a news article? Has the affected party contacted the local disctrict attorney's office?

    Too many to name...

Sounds like civil rights violation under color of law-USC 1983, malfeasance in office, armed robbery, extortion, etc., etc.

There are some pretty crooked LEO's in some of the small towns up here, but I haven't heard of this myself.I believe that if it did happen, I would be going to jail as well, I definitely would never pay a ticket on the side of the road.

First off, WTH was this person going through NE LA if he was returning from MI? That is over a hundred miles out of the way to get to Natchez.

I had this happen to me, by a local officer from the town of Baldwin, LA. I was speeding when he stopped me. He gave me a ticket and said if I paid him in cash on the spot, it would not go on my driving record. I was very young and paid the man. He gave me a receipt. I am most certain that after I drove off, all of his copies of the ticket and receipt dissappeared. All I know is that it never showed up on my record. I knew something was up when he told me it was only $50 for the fine for driving 67 in a 55. I chalk it up as a learning experience and laugh about it now.

Again, who, when, where? Got the deputies name?

This happend to a friend in florida once. The officer told him he had to pay it right then, he flipped the ticket over and pointed out the mail-in information to the deputy.

Maybe the suspect had a squeeze in Little Rock. Could be why he capitulated, so the little lady wouldn't find hm in jail out of route.

Seriously, the story comes from a reliable party who got it from a reliable party who is kin to the guy. Knowing the person I got it from, I estimate there is some substance to the story or I would not have put it up here. I decline to post the whereabouts of the incident, the department involved or any names so I don't have to keep looking over my shoulder. I got 'enuff problems in front.

i think the guy has a warrant in a state that doesnt extradite for that penalty. i also believe that he has a warrant, and had he been released on his signature, he would never pay. i also believe he would have gone to prision. as some parishes do not have a jail.

    that is what i think.
