Found this snake in my pool this morning! We have a pretty large ditch behind the house and the heavy rain last night made him seek refuge in the pool :eek3:. I chased the little sucker around the pool for about 10 minutes before I finally fished him out with a net and killed him with a shovel.

Any ideas what kind it is?

We used to have a snake that looked a lot like this in IN growing up, called it a black racer. It too, wasn't poisonous, but it's big and long and would be enough for me to get the shotgun out.

Yellow-bellied watersnake. Harmless. Don't think I've ever seen so many people (grown men at that) afraid/ignorant of animals and wanting to kill them because of it than on this board. Snakes, spiders, dogs... just sayin.

I don't like killing snakes. They're just trying to live their life just like we are. 9 times out of 10 they'll run away from you but when they feel threatened they will defend themselves just as we would. If you're going to go to the trouble of messing with it at least relocate it somewhere safe for you and the snake. I've even relocated a few rattlesnakes.
