I wanted to ask for any opinions, suggestions, or recommendations on home-defense ammo. I have Glock 17, 19, and 26 so those will be the firearms I am looking to fill with other than factory ammo. The 19 or 26 will be CCW and the other along with 17 will be at the home. Is their a particular HP round that is best suited for home defense? Any that give more reliability or performance than others and especially for glocks? Thanks in advance everyone.

I like the Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP. My Glocks digest it flawlessly and it's received good marks in most testing, including FBI tests.

    Federal +P+

Federal makes an excellent +P+ round "9BPLE" that shoots extrely.well and has a long history of excellent performance. Best thing is it sells for under 20 bucks per box of 50.

I've ordered about 10 boxes through here:

    http://www.policehq.com/Ammunition/FEDERAL-AMMO

    Free shipping over 129.00.

Lots of police departments used this round over the years. There is a good YouTube review by TNOUTDOORS9:

Ive shot it in the past through a G17 and recoil was not bad at all.

Three great choices are HST, Gold Dot and Ranger T in 124+P.

I agree with this. HST is what I carry.

Anyone ever try out hornady critical hornady critical defense? I use it in my glock and have yet to have a problem with it. It isn't a +P round though.

Wouldn't over penetration be a problem for HD ammo?

From the EXCELLENT examples given in JBONNETTE's post you can get a great idea of what the bullet could do.

Some might be hard to find at the moment, may want to pick a few and when you see them on the shelf get them.

And generally, +P ammo, though usually having a lighter projectile , has more velocity and energy than the heavier conventional round of respective caliber.

You can also find gelatin penetration information for factory rounds, so if overpenetration is a concern, do some more research.

    Don't forget Hornady Critical Defense.

I'd have to search for the articles again, but I've read several where the Critical Defense tested poorly in both expansion and penetration as compared to Gold Dot, HST and several others.

The three most proven brands/rounds currently in use by LEA's Nationwide in common defensive calibers are Gold Dot, HST and Ranger T.

Yeah, just my .02- but it's usually a good idea to find out what the largest local LE dept is using. They've already done the research for you.

BRPD, EBRSO, and many others including the largest LEA in the nation the City of New York use Gold Dot.
The 9mm Gold Dot works in New York when the LEO are able to properly hit the BG :)

You are splitting hairs between Gold Dot, HST and Ranger T, they all have good street credentials in OIS.

I disagree. I've heard a lot of stories about poor decisions made to trust them. After seeing a lot of bullets go through auto glass, car doors, etc, in a frw classes the general trend is bonded=better.
