... working on getting a job as a Safety officer...

If you're interested in the Safety field, consider getting your Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification. I spent over 20 yrs in industrial safety, worked for a global corporation, based in US but worked throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. CSP is the ticket into that field.

That is an excellent suggestion!!! I am reading a study guide for the ASP and CSP right now. The only thing I have found that is going to hold me back is not having a degree. In the book it is stating that you have to have bachelors to even apply to take the certification. I will still consider it but I am going another route for the time being, the COSS (Certified Occupational Safety Specialist). This course is offered by LSU and some Parish safety councils for a little more money.

Those would not be recognized by the VA. But a gunsmith course would and that is something that I would look into. I wish I would have had the post 9/11 GI Bill. I ended up not using all mine and lost it, big mistake!!!

i was just coming to post gunsmithing but you beat me to it. i remember nomad saying that thats why he fits in a lot of different circles because he likes to tinker, collect and shoot and many people do one or two of those but not many do all three. definitely a big +1 on learning gun smithing

I am COSS certified, but don't have the 3 years of experience necessary to get the CSP yet.

    My degree correlates.

Ok, how about the ASP? You can get the ASP with less experience. From what I am hearing and being told you can go to work with the COSS cert. At least I hope that is true otherwise my career path ideas when I get home are screwed!!!!

    ASP is in my future.

As to getting work with the COSS:

    Onshore: yes

Offshore (I am not interested in a 9-5 job, so am only looking there) its proving harder than anticipated.
I've got a correlating degree, about a year of experience, background in EMS... And while I'm told from mutable sources that there are more jobs than certified people...
    I've been looking since July.

This week (it was moved back by the hurricane) I'll be sitting down with one company and will likely end up working on a contract basis with them as a means of getting my foot in the door.

I'm fortunate: with money saved, low overhead, flexibility, and a pension and healthcare I can be as picky as I choose.
I see too many people start down a path because it's the easy one and never get back on track. That will not be me.

I know that I looked on rigzone the other day and there were about 300 HSE positions. I have experience overseas as an HSE Coordinator now I just need to get the Cert so I can go to work when I get home.
