So one of my wife's boss likes to shoot skeet. He offered to take the both of us and show us the ropes. The range I'm about to join has a skeet area also. So here are my questions

What's a good shotgun to start with. I don't need anything really expensive. I would like something that my wife can use also.

What type of shells should I use.

Anything tips or other accessories I might find useful?

You can use any shotgun you want for skeet shooting. Whenever we go, the wife, son and I always use our Rem 870's (12 and 20ga). It's what the son and I use for duck hunting and you may as well practice with the gun you hunt with.

I usually use whatever I can get cheapest. Walmart sells the cases of 100 shells for $21-$25. #6 or 7 1/2 shot is good enough to blast clays with.

After you get your timing and lead down good, and your busting clays all day, I find that a bottle of tylenol is a good accessory to have to end the pounding in your head.

Good luck with the skeet shooting, and have fun.

Okay let me better explain what I want to know. I was thinking of a 870. I don't know if it would make a difference if I went with 12 or 20 gauge. I have a Mossberg 500 but would have to buy a different barrel. I figured why not just buy a new shotgun. And that's for the *******/gay remarks guys. I guess I could laugh at you for staying in ******** LA but thats your choice to be assholes and live where you do.

I want a FN SLP Mark 1 but I dont think the wife's going to like that price tag. Six guns in one yr is pushing her buttons

I like shooting skeet from the hip with my Mosssberg "just in case" 12g with the 18 1/2" barrel. I did it a while back at the BZ with this gun on a lark, and was surprised I was able to do it. but I think the 6 shot helped out as well.

Ok, seriously now ... how competitive do you want to get? If all you want to do is occasionally break some birds and have some fun but don't really care how many, yes, you can use just about anything out there. If you want to be competitive, you need to have an over/under or a semi capable of shooting powder-puff loads. The semi is going to be generally cheaper, but you can get some mighty fine over/unders if you know what to look for.

Figure out where you want to go, and we'll help you get there ...

Asianpersuasion. I just want you to know that it is all in good fun. I'm not racist and I was just kidding. Hell, my ex-wife is Japanese and I have a Japanese daughter. I know you're a good dude.

+1 on the Rem 1100. I took a skeet class at UNO (I actually got credit for going shooting once a week!!!!). We shot #8 reloads which we loaded ourselves in class. We also only cleaned the guns once per semester- that's probably more than 1000 rounds! - and had almost no failures. And we cleaned them w/ WD40...
Those guns held up beautifully. I had a ball shooting skeet. I'd love to try it again. Is there a skeet range in SE LA?

The mossy silver limited is around $550 OTC

but When I thought about getting into some one recommended get a inexpensive auto and try it out.

I think I might start sponsoring a youth Trap club, its more popular than 10m Air rifle and the kids I can get shooting the better.

I guess I need to learn to shoot now...

Shooting the last stage (with one bird coming right at you) with a pump would be a challenge!

    ???

Never have seen doubles thrown at Station 8 in a real round of skeet (Except when we play around).

His troubles with the pump will be at stations 1,2,6 and 7.

VERY few ranges will allow #6 shot.
MOST have a maximum shot size of #7.5

For skeet shooting #9's or #8's are perfectly fine, and #7.5's are OK (lot fewer pellets).

    +1.

The best gun to start with is one that you can borrow or rent. It needs to fit you, and needs to cycle light loads reliably.

After you try the skeet shooting, you'll have a LOT more fun with the sporting clays. PSC doesn't (didn't used to) offer sporting clays. Probably have to drive over toward Katy (American Shooting Center). Worth the trip.

A "soft" clays course is a LOT easier (and usually a LOT more fun) for a rookie than a skeet range. Of course if the boss's wife is a skeet specialist, that's the place you'll have to start. Just don't get trapped in that "rut." Skeet is a LOT of fun, but it's a dying sport compared to Sporting Clays, and the "die hards" are evangelical in trying to bring new sheep into the fold.

Whatever gun works at skeet will work pretty well at clays. Remember .....the gun needs to fit you.

LSP is a tournament trap shooter ..... I'm sure he'll take you......... but watch out for Pangris and the "blind man" tournaments.
