I have a Russian Capture K98 that shoots a good bit left and strings horizontally. I have tried shimming the barrel in different ways just behind the bayonet lug and that has influenced the stringing, but not significantly. Has anyone had a similar problem and solved it? Anyone had a gunsmith do K98 work of this sort? Thanks.

You have to remember that this is not only a military mauser but also a parted together military mauser. You are going to have wood contacting the barrel in odd ways and causing stringing and such, and pretty much being able to keep five rounds on a twelve inch paper plate at a hundred yards with the irons is doing pretty good. All that being said the russian captures are worth a decent and ever increasing amount of money. I would not chop down, bed or drill and tap anything on that rifle. You could easily get an aftermarket sporter stock and bed that to fit the action and float it off the barrel but just make sure you keep all your original furniture for when it comes time for it to change hands.

Thanks Rusty and Jess. I like the original stock and have not wanted to chop on it. I think ya'll are right; I need to get over it and fit a Boyd's stock and put the original away.
