I'm currently looking at either an Arsenal
SLR104-34 or a SLR107FR-31. I know the ballistic differences between 7.62/5.45 and favor the latter. However, I'm concerned over future price and availability of both cartridges and mags. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

if you are concerned over ammo then look and see if you can find any of the 106 series because it is in 5.56 NATO, mags are about $45 each.

the 5.45 ammo can still be found online in either 7n6 or commercial, mags are $35-40 each

7.62 is at a good price and is online and in retail stores, commercial ammo from overseas and American is available. mags can be for good prices

if you can only get one, then i would suggest 7.62x39 and start buying ammo and mags.

Choose a caliber you like and go with that. I'd pick 5.45 based on performance, but everybody has different needs. There is a reason that they switched to that in '74 though.

Oh and you get bonus points being able to spell "Kalashnikov".

Both are popular and will not be disappearing any time soon.
That being said the 7.62x39 is easy to find while 5.45 usually has to be ordered online.
556 and 545 are designed with automatic capability in mind which sadly is not commonly available in rifles.
So I like the extra power of the 762 for semi auto. But they are all good rounds and you can not go wrong with any of them.
If you want 556 just go AR and save yourself the hassle. Commonality of parts if what makes the major platforms so nice.

If you have not shot a 5.45x39 you will be suprised. A 16 inch rifle 74 shoots a lot nicer than an ar in 5.56. If you only plan to buy one get the 7.62. Search google for ballistic comparisons between the 3 rounds. The 7.62 wins most of the time.
