I agree with thperez1972. Yes, he stopped the threat, but I'm not sure that this should be a model for other officers to follow.
To wit, he broke several of the fundamental rules of gun safety: he did not always keep it pointed in a safe direction. He most definitely did not know what was beyond his target. And shooting at a vehicle could easily cause ricochet rounds that could still be traveling at fatal velocities.
I know that situations like that require split-second decision making in less-than-optimal conditions, but it does suggest that there's an opportunity here to discuss protocol and training.
