leave a chromoly barrel "white"

how can it be protected? just a clear coat or good oil wipe downs? any down sides to leaving it in the "white"?

is there a clear duracoat or cerakote that could be applied? i know on some guys drag bikes they like how the chromoly colors as its welded, and to keep the raw look they have the parts cleared.
