No .35 Remington love? I have a Marlin 336C in it. Not quite the round as the .45-70, but packs more punch than the .30-30. It is also pretty common at Walmart and Academy around here. Don't mean to muddy your water any. Couldn't go wrong with any of the choices.
yeah im just gonna keep it simple this time. My first time wading into the waters of lever guns.

Either rifle caliber is going to cost a bit to shoot unless you reload. 45-70 more so than the 30-30. I found that the lighter 30-30 actually recoils more than a heavy 45-70 in marlin lever guns with factory loads. I'm currently working up some loads on the 45-70 and will get to feel its full capabilities soon.

UhOh, I see someone fixin to get bit by the lever action bug. Once you get one you just won't be able to stop. I started out with a Marlin 444s, that thing is a beast. Soon found a Winchester Model 1892 made in 1906 in 38-40 that is as smooth as silk. Little later picked up a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and then within a month of that a Marlin 1895 Guide gun.

Last one is a Marlin 336RC made in 1964 in 30-30. Working on a re-finish of the stocks as it needed a little attention. Giving them a hand rubbed oil finish. Been working on it for about three weeks now. Just a few more coats to rub in and they'll be done.

Yeah, i am addicted. Wife has asked a few time why I need so many. Tell her it is the same as with our dogs, some of them just had to be rescued. If you are going to buy a Marlin, buy a used one made before 2008. The later years were made after Remington bought out Marlin and the quality of the workmanship suffered badly. It is getting better, but still not as good as when they were made in New Haven.

I’ve lost to many deer with a 30/30, but not a one with the 45/70. Got rid of all my 30/30’s except the Marlin 336 I inherited from Dad. My Dad and I both went to the Marlin that kicks like a Mule, the 444S. Then I bought my bought a Marlin 1895 45/70

I can't believe none of y'all threw in any pictures.

Winchester 1894 AE .30-30. The AE stands for angle eject. This one is a short carbine model called the 'Ranger'.

If you keep your range close and place your shots well, there's nothing in North America it won't drop effectively.
