Ok, so I have done some homework and narrowed my choices down quite a bit. I have a 28.5" draw and I know I can handle 70lbs of draw weight (even though I think I will choose somewhere closer to 65). Here are the bows that I am contemplating. I have yet to shoot any of them and my final decision will weigh more on that than anything I read here or anywhere else for that matter BUT... if you have any experience with any of these bows or comments.. opinions.. whatever... put them here. If you know of any bows I am overlooking in the sub-$400 range, list it here...

Here is the list (all in my price range).

    Bear Showdown
    PSE Stinger NI
    Parker Wildfire XP
    Martin Cheetah
    Bear Lights Out
    PSE Brute LT

Any and all comments, opinions and suggestions are deeply appreciated. :)

Matthews builds great bows, but are ridiculously over priced. Check out the Bear's you have listed. Their quality and customer service have dramatically increased over the years. I've played with them once or twice at the indoor range at my local bowshop. Seems like the fit and function is fine and up to par with all other quality bowmakers.

Need to go shoot these bows at a local dealer and buy the one you like. Bows are almost like custom fit clothes. You have to find what you like. Do you like how it draws (is it smooth, is it rough) when you shoot do you feel vibration in the handle? When you hold it in your hand does it roll forward, stay straight or roll backward? If you're new to archery you'll want something with a 7" brace height or more.

Otherwise you can't go wrong with those bows you picked out (except the Martin). PSE are great bows too. I shoot an Archery Research AR31, which is a PSE bow.

My order of test shooting would be as follows:

    Brute LT
    Stinger NI
    Parker Wildfire
    Bear Lights Out
    Bear Showdown

These are pretty much in order of IBO speed. 308fps - 290fps not that speed matters (because when you add silencers and shoot fletched arrows the speeds are going to reduce by 10 - 20 fps) but you also want to take into consideration the brace heights which the more you have the more forgiving the bow will be when you are shooting it. Axel to Axel length is something to consider but not a big factor as all of these bows are between 30 - 32" tall.

Thats exactly the type of response I was looking for. I will toss out the Martin (I heard from a couple of other people, as well, that the Martin wasn't on the same level as the other bows I had my eyes on).

I know you said you don't want a Mathews, but I just have to say that I couldn't be happier with the Mathews Reezen that I bought 2 weeks ago. While I was there, the salesman was telling a guy about a new Hoyt that is as fast as the Alphamax (which is a $750 bow), but is priced at $500. I can't remember the name of it, but the salesman at Bowie's was pushing it to a couple people.

Yeah, thats Hoyt's new "Hawk" line of bows. The TurboHawk, SuperHawk and PowerHawk. The PowerHawk is the cheapest of the three and is a nice bow for sure.

I don't dislike Mathews. Its just that I am not willing to spend $900 on a bare bow, regardless of the manufacturer.

Now, if I come across some old stock from last year and get a good deal, then so be it but I am not going into this venture with the intention of blowing nearly 1k on a bare bow.

    I have a MQ-1 and love it.

I had it restrung in Metarie.

Okay forgot the name of the place on Veterans, but it's next to HOOTERS.

There were some fine second hand Mathews bows there, completely set up with arrows in the $500 range. If you buy from them, a Mathews dealer, you keep the lifetime waranty.

    Just a thought.

Go somewhere you can shoot em all before you buy.
