He is 8........I have a friend that has a 742 in the .243 and my son likes shooting it better than my bolt action.

Just a thought I started of with a 243 bolt action and I learned to make the first shot count. I got a 30-06 semi and got into thenking well I have that 2nd shot if I mis and and had to go back to a bolt action for deer hunting because that 2nd shot it alot harder to make on the run.

I 100% agree when I first started deer hunting my dad bought me a Browning A bolt 243 youth model. I was only allowed 2 bullets it the gun so he could keep track and I don't get trigger happy. I personally think a bolt action is better to start with just to teach him gun safety and also make that first shot count. Good luck with your search.

I started with a single shot. Safety always first. Not to say your boy cant handle a semi auto, but to start, a single shot or bolt action is the best way to go. Teaches him more to focus on aiming and not shooting.

He has a single shot .223 and has killed a couple of deer. I am wanting to up grade to a gun he can use the rest of his life.

Then get him a 270. More blood if you have to track it and he can shot further. Hated my 243 no blood trail. Just a dot here a dot there. I when and bought a 30-06 at 14
