I am flying to Alaska from Louisiana with a short layover in San Francisco in June on United Airlines for a 10 day vacation in a rented RV. I want to bring my Glock 26 for CCW in Alaska. Is it better to check the Glock 26 with the airline or is better to federal express it to a gun dealer in Anchorage and pick it up from the gun dealer after I arrive. My research indicates these are the two ways I can get the pistol to Alaska. I am fairly certain I cannot just buy a pistol there as I am not a resident of Alaska. I am concerned the pistol might be stolen from my checked in luggage with the airline. I don't think the layover in San Francisco for an hour to change planes will be an issue with the pistol since it is in my checked luggage but I am not positive on that. Any comments, thoughts???

Flying with it would be easier IMO.

Just separate the gun from the ammo, have the pistol in a lock box inside a locked suitcase. That's the general rule. Check with whatever airline you'll be using for specifics...

Other option is fly to seattle, rent a car and take the ferry to alaska. If you check it on the airline, you should be good though. Try to get the most direct flight as you can. Gun has to be unloaded and in a lockable container. Ammo has to be in a factory package like the original box and all magazines must be unloaded.

Don't forget to declare it when you check your bag. Tell the ticketing agent for your airline that you need to declare a handgun. No curbside check-in.

you must cover the pistol in vaseline and swallow it, if you set off the metal detectors tell them you had a surgery.

you should probably take the other advice offered.....

easiest way is to just mail it to yourself.

It is not illegal according to the feds; it is possible that the states involved may have an issue.

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity? [Back]

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.
