Looking for the laws on shipping guns within state.

There is a guy that has a pair of pistols I'd like to have but he's in Ruston...... I'm in Slidell.

Do they have to go to ffl?

Sure? FFL to FFL for transfer across State lines, but within the State?

I stand corrected. Face to face is fine, but if a shipper is involved it must go through a FFL.

    Yes, must go to ffl.

    This is incorrect.

Instate transfer of firearms is regulated by state law not federal. Only federal law requires FFL for transfer.
In LA any firearm can be shipped from one individual to another. Handguns can not ship USPS, you must ship UPS or FedEx. Both UPS and FedEx require you to ship Air, I think next day.

I will try to find a link so you are not just taking advice from some guy on the internet.

    Not according to the ATF.

    https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonlicensee-ship-firearm-common-or-contract-carrier

May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm or ammunition, prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm and requires obtaining written acknowledgement of receipt.

    [18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a)(5), 922(e) and (f); 27 CFR 478.30 and 478.31]

    https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonlicensee-ship-firearm-through-us-postal-service

May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?

A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

    [18 U.S.C. 1715, 922(a)(5) and 922 (a)(2)(A); 27 CFR 478.31]

It depends whether it is a handgun or long gun. You can ship a long gun in-state directly, but handguns must be shipped to ffl.

Sure you can ship within the state, but it will cost as much if not more than driving.

It depends on what your time is worth.
Next Day shipping will run about $50-$60.
Unless I can turn it in to a overnight vacation, my time is worth more on a drive over 2 hours. But then the travel cost is more.
But with the shipping cost on handguns, it has to be a great deal to make it worthwhile either way.

I agree, it's very dependent on the circumstances.

Which reminds me, I've had a lot of people drive for hours, to pick up a small non-firearm item, when I could have shipped it for $5.25

I don't think overnight delivery is required for any firearm. Ive rec'd a bunch and never rec'd one overnight.

Sometimes it's cheaper to use a FFL to transfer/ship pistols. Just something to keep in mind.

As to the original question, yes 100% legal intrastate.

Thanks for all of the posts.

I had through I read somewhere where shipping in state was okay. The deal is a pretty good deal but I feel that it may be too difficult to explain or make someone feel okay with shipping the guns like that.

Glad this thread can be somewhat educational.

However legal it may be. How would you feel shipping firearms to some random person across the state?
