the dividions for the steel match is OPEN, Limited, and .22

So a .22 open (optics) falls in the same class as iron sights

How many mags do you need to compete?

Each stage is 25 rounds if you don't miss. It's 5 strings of 5 shots. Depending on your mag's it could be as little 2 or as many as 5.
