    Reducing Inventory!
M1917 .30-06 WWI Era Remington Mfrd "American Enfield" bolt action rifle. SN 676xxx. Sometimes called the P1917 or P-17.
American industry was unable to retool for and quickly produce the Springfield M1903 in sufficient numbers to arm US troops for WW I. The Remington, Eddystone & Winchester factories had just completed a huge order of P-14 rifles in .303 for Great Britian. They modified the P-14 design and began producing the M1917 in .30-06 to fill the gap. According to one website, Winchester produced around 500,000, Remington over 500,000, and Eddystone around 1,118,000. They estimated that the M1917 armed about 75-80% of the US Expeditionary Force.
The M1917 held 6 rds. It was loaded w/ a 5 rd Springfield clip, then topped off, when there was enough time, with a sixth rd. This particular rifle appears to be one used by the Greenland "Sirius Sled Patrol" (SSP), due to the characteristic semicircular "notch" cut into the top receiver. The notch allowed loading of longer commercial hollow point ammo using Springfield clips, for dispatching dangerous animals.

Greenland was a possession of Nazi-occupied Denmark during WW II, but chose not to the obey the homeland's imposed conditions. Local police units formed their own military, and openly battled the Nazis. After Denmark fell to the Nazis, a visiting US Coast Guard Cutter "inadvertently" left 50 M1917's & ammo in Greenland. They were issued to the SSP and local sheriffs who formed combat groups The SSP, and its WWII predocessor units, used dog sleds and the M1917 through at least, through 2015. Polar bears and musk ox present continual dangers to the present day. The SSP, many times, rejected replacement modern weapons and vehicles. WOW! What an endorsement of the bad ass toughness of the M1917 - in a forbidding Arctic setting!

Interesting history links available online tell better stories than this post habout Denmark/Greenland's acquisition and SSP use of the M1917

The M1917 was resurrected from storage and issued to units and also for training in WW II.

It is longer and heavier than the 1903 ... and clunky looking. Arguments about the two rifles comparative accuracy persist till today.

The action cocks on closing; the front and rear sights are protected by substantial "ears"; the rear sight is a double aperture with a lift up ladder adjustable peep for long range. Metal is blued, and in great condition under the wood. There is a chunk of wood missing from the stock forward of the funky bent bolt handle, but does not affect the action's secure bedding. I have not fired this rifle since purchase many years ago. In MHO, it is in very good shape. Barrel has the correct Remington "R" mark behind the front sight. Non-matched serial numbers on parts.

Cash Only: $1,100.00 - sorry, no trades - inventory reduction. FTF sale; LA current driver license; my bill of sale signed; willing to drive half way from old Metairie for a confirmed sale.
