Recently obtained a 1981 S&W 686 no dash, pre-lock, 6" revolver, wood grips, unfired and in the original box with papers.

So, shoot it ... Or not?

Will you get more enjoyment from having it in the safe, or from playing with it at the range? I vote shoot it!

i know guys that love to reach in the safe and say "this one is unfired!"

if you prefer that over range time, do your thing. Don't hand it to me, I'd fire it in a heartbeat.

From the expanded picture in Austin's post, I can't see a "cylinder ring". 686s are really hot right now but will they be in 5,10, 15 years? No ring, I say put it in the safe and get it out and clean it twice a year. A ring, shoot. Can't decide, find a whipped up one and shoot the hell out of it!!

I leave my pretty ones for fondling and found a 586 that I shoot about 3 times a week. Works for me!!!!!

    Regards,

    Dad

I had a collectors bottle of fine whiskey that I drank... its not nearly as valuable as urine.

However, this is a gun, shoot it. If its truly a keep sake and be passed on, why did you tell the public you have it?

I have a MKIV Series '70 Gold Cup Match that was passed to me from my Grandpaw, the original owner... he and I truly enjoy shooting the **** out of it. Just take extra care of the finish and its all good.

In the end, you NEED to know if and how it shoots. Shoot 50rds through it and then put it up. But should you ever have to rely on this weapon to save you, I think you should know how it shoots. Just my opinion.

Don't they test fire them before shipping? If so, somebody beat you to it? My dad years ago gave me his "gun" collection. Had some nice guns that were never shot. Took up too much room, sold them and bought stuff I like to shoot. I never looked back.

I would keep it unfired. I have done the same thing ...... but thats only because I have others that i shoot all the time.

If you decide to sell it I am interested.
    Thanks
