Do mineral spirits bring the finish off as well as the cosmoline?

Mineral spirits didn't do anything for me but clean it. Didn't remove the cosmoline or the finish. I will probably stain mine with a dark cherry color.

Yep. Any chemical strong enough to remove the cosmoline will strip the finish. Only way to remove cosmoline without damage to finish is by "sweating" it out with heat. But who'd want to keep the original finish on anyways? I sure didn't. Finished mine with some colonial maple stain from Home Depot and Tru-Oil.
