My 80 year old uncle gas a 303 e field and when we tried to shoot it the bolt will not close completely. I'm thinking it has something to do with the ammo. When you chamber a round it will go into the chamber but when you turn the bolt down it will go almost all the way down except for the last 1/4 inch and the bolt won't lock. The ammo was modern 303 British but maybe we need another type 303 ammo.

Headspace is not right. DO NOT SHOOT IT until gunsmith looks at it.

I figured head spacing may be the problem. I know Jake ans will give him a call. We also figured out that shooting the gun was out of the question. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like the (removable) bolt head is not screwed all the way in. One quarter inch sounds like one more revolution. Remove the bolt, turn the bolt head in one more turn and then try it.

I agree with Labeeman. I had the same problem with my 303. It was solved by removing the bolt and tightening the bolt head. Good luck.

I know this is an older thread but A number of questions come to mind - as others have stated check to ensure your bolt head is on tight - extract the bolt and see if your bolt head will screw down another turn or so- also the Lee Enfield's have 4 different bolt heads from 0 to 3 - check what number of bolt head you have - as the gun wares down you might need to switch to another numbered bolt head - hope some of that is useful.

Try turning the bolt head in all the way.
