The New Orleans archbishop claims he will boycott the graduation ceremonies of the country's only historically black Catholic university over its decision to award an honorary degree to abortion rights supporter and Democratic strategist Donna Brazile.

Archbishop Alfred Hughes wrote a letter to the president of Louisiana's Xavier University expressing his disappointment, according to The Times-Picayune.

"Her public statements on the abortion issue are not in keeping with Catholic moral teaching," he wrote.

The friction comes after some Catholic groups protested the University of Notre Dame's decision to invite President Obama, also an abortion-rights supporter, to deliver its commencement address next month.

Except for the fact that he's the head Catholic in New Orleans, and Xavier - a Catholic institution - is supposed to follow what he says, and they are honoring someone who holds to things the Catholics oppose, then I guess you might have a point.

For my part, I do a good job trying.. :p

I can't stand Donna Brazile. Why is it so many people who are pro-choice should have been the ones aborted in the first place? It's really too bad her mother wasn't pro-choice.

Perhaps I'm alone here. I passionately support the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I passionately support the First Amendment, too.

I'm not sure where being pro-killing babies falls under the First Amendment, but if you're implying that Brazille should not be persecuted for her beliefs, that's fine and I could really care less what she says or thinks about anything.

On the other hand, Xavier is private school heavily supported by the Catholic Church, and they in no way should be promoting a person who believes something adamantly opposed by the Church.

There is another issue here which is far more important than any other factor in this discussion. Xavier is what, about 95% black students by attendance, if I had to guess? Do any of you realize how many black pregnancies as a percentage end in abortion or how many black babies have been aborted since Roe v. Wade? 13 million black babies have died due to abortion (1/3 of the black population in this country). Somewhere in the neighborhood of 60% of pregnancies among black women end in abortion.

My point? To have a black woman who promotes such a horrific crime among the black community speak to a bunch of young black adults is completely irresponsible and reckless. How about having someone who promotes responsible and mature behavior speak to them? Someone like a J.C. Watts, or Condi Rice, or Alan Keyes, or someone like that? Oh yeah, because they're a conservative.
