I saw this in an email this morning.......... Any LEO care to share any insight in this new system. Is it even legit? If so, I think it's pretty damn cool.

    Heads Up:
New Radar installed along Highway in railing system, it is motion activated, radar detectors are useless, when system is turned on you are instantly busted, a photo of your car and speed is sent to a patrol car a few miles down the road with your ticket. It is now in use between Baton Rouge and Lafayette on the Atchafalaya Basin elevated highway...

Cool. I think it's pretty bas ass. I know people get all uptight about the whole speeding camera thing, but don't speed and don't worry. Or do like I do...... Once I find out where all the cameras are, I just slow down right there!!

I also noticed the other day coming back from a client's office with my boss, a trooper on the side of I-49 with a radar gun that the radar detector never picked up. Is that a new kind gun or something?

He would be using a lidar gun. If your detector doesn't pick up lasers then it wouldn't work. Also, it doesn't send out a constant signal. They must aim and shoot it like a gun. They likely didnt hit the button whilst you drove by.

    Damn it. I have a Passport 9500ix.
I have the same one and it works quite well.

Unlike radar, it is legal to jam LIDAR guns. Escort makes a shifter that will work with the Passport detectors, typically you just jam the gun until you get down to a reasonable speed then turn it off. On older guns, it just looks like the trooper isn't hitting the right spot to get a reading. Newer guns might pull a jam code. I wouldn't recommend jamming all the way to the gun, you may end up getting a royal chewing out on the side of the road and a ticket for something else (don't ask me how I know).

I don't think radar jammers are illegal in Louisiana. I did some research on lidar and jammers and there was a lot of evidence pointing out that they are often multi thousand dollar pieces of junk. Driving smart with a detector is the way to go. Smart and safe.

If a unit sends out a radar signal to jam a radar, it is illegal. You need a license from the FCC to emit radar waves. And before anyone asks, when I was a trooper, I carried a copy of the states license from the FCC.

Thanks, but it didn't address speed detectors.

I understand how lasers work and how radar/laser guns work. I was curious how this need breed works.

I think you completely missed the sarcasm in my post that the "brand new" technology of L.A.S.E.R. is not actually brand new. It won't show up on a radar detector though so the OP was asking if the "radar gun" was some new kind of device. It was a laser speed detector. There is no new breed.
