    quick thought.....the Seminole Indians used to put four small logs with all four ends touching....like the N,S,E,W of a compass....when the American troops were heard coming near, they Seminoles would pull the logs away from each other to extinguish the fire...when trouble passed, they slid them back together and it rekindled. They were in the everglades though, which provided a screen above in many ways. Just a thought.

    This is simple: light discipline. There are numerous ways to achieve this that I won't go into, but it seems to me like your choice of shelter is bad. You have picked a bad spot. The area you've described is a sloping hillside, a ridge line, a Steep saddle, or desert Mesa. All of which are bad. You'd be in danger of a wash out, a rock slide, heavy winds / extreme cold, and most likely too far from water. Your avenue of retreat would also likely be very limited or impossible.
